Body Language Tips to Look Relaxed and Natural in Photos

I always felt so awkward in front of the camera, as I’m sure many of us do at some point. I’m no model or influencer, and I never thought I’d figure out how to look natural in photos without feeling like I’m forcing it. After years of trial and error, though, I learned a few angles and poses that work for me, helping me guarantee at least one photo that I love. It took some time and a lot of weird-looking pics, but now I know which body language tricks bring out that natural, confident look we all want for Instagram.

If you’re like me, you probably wonder, “What do I do with my hands?” or “How should I stand?” I’ve been asked these questions by friends countless times, and today, I want to share the small, subtle movements that help me look relaxed on camera. I’ll share some of my favorite body language tips along with photos of me using them in my own poses. And if you’re curious about any of my outfits in the pics, I’ve linked them through my Like to Know It account, so you can grab any items you love!

1. Touch Your Hair

This one is kinda a lot haha but I still think it turned out good! I love the drama of it.

Just lightly touching my hair here!

This is one of my absolute favorites for an effortless look! You don’t want to be grabbing your hair, but rather lightly touching it. You can touch the ends, lightly flick your bangs, or even use both hands to brush your hair to one side. This pose gives that casual “caught in the moment” vibe, and it works well for everything from selfies to full-body shots.

2. Put One Hand on the Wall

This is my go-to for standing shots, especially when I’m trying to give a little “attitude” to the photo. Leaning with one hand against a wall or even a nearby object makes me feel grounded, and that confidence tends to come across in photos. This pose also helps me relax my shoulders, which makes the rest of my body look more at ease.

3. Look Over Your Shoulder

Can you tell I like my right side? LOL

If you’re looking for a flattering angle, the over-the-shoulder look is worth a try. You can choose whichever side you like best—this is all about knowing your angles. Sometimes I’ll even add a slight smile or a soft gaze over my shoulder for a touch of mystery. It’s subtle but adds a lot to the photo’s overall vibe.

4. Pop Your Hip Out

(my sister taught me this one lol)

This one is especially great for bikini pics or anything where I want a more defined silhouette. By shifting my weight to one leg and popping my hip, it gives the illusion of a smaller waist and adds a natural curve. I like this pose because it’s simple but has a big impact, especially for shots where I’m a bit more dressed up or in form-fitting outfits.

5. Grab the Waistline of Your Pants or Skirt

 Just lightly grabbing my skirt!

If you ever find yourself awkwardly wondering what to do with your hands, try lightly holding the waistline of your pants, skirt, or dress. This adds a little movement and helps define your waist without looking forced. It’s great for adding a natural feel, especially if you’re wearing high-waisted pants or a flowy skirt.

6. Look Away

What is she looking at? We’ll never know.

It doesn’t matter where—just look somewhere other than directly at the camera. You can glance down, off to the side, or even up (if the lighting’s right). For some reason, looking away makes a photo feel more candid and genuine, like someone just happened to catch you in a moment.

7. Hold an Object

It’s hard to see here but I am holding my purse with both hands.

Finally, grab something natural in your environment—whether it’s your bag, a drink, or even a prop that makes sense with where you are. Holding an object relaxes your posture and helps your hands look less tense. Plus, it makes the photo feel more spontaneous, as if you weren’t even posing at all.

Each of these tips has helped me transform my photos from awkward and stiff to relaxed and natural, and I hope they do the same for you! Remember, these are just starting points. Over time, you’ll find the body language tricks that feel the most “you” and bring out your personality in every shot.
